About Nylon

Nylon (Polyamide) is the strongest common 3D printing filament, with exceptional tensile strength, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance. It is the ideal material for gears, bearings, living hinges, snap-fit enclosures, and high-stress mechanical parts. However, Nylon is extremely hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air rapidly) and must be printed from a dry box after extensive drying. It also warps aggressively without an enclosure, making it one of the most demanding filaments to master.

Enclosure recommended for Nylon printing.
Dry filament before use: 80°C for 16 hours.

Nylon at a Glance

Strengths

  • Highest tensile strength among common filaments (50-90 MPa)
  • Excellent wear and abrasion resistance
  • Excellent fatigue resistance (living hinges, snap fits)
  • Good heat resistance (PA6 softens ~180C)
  • Ideal for gears, bearings, and mechanical parts

Weaknesses

  • Extremely hygroscopic (absorbs moisture rapidly)
  • Requires extensive drying (12-20 hours)
  • Must print from a dry box
  • Warps aggressively without enclosure
  • Difficult to get right for beginners
